Black Belt Grading 03.12.2011
12/4/2011 9:33:41 PM

On Saturday 3rd December 2011 Bujinkan Newbury Dojo held its first Black Belt grading.

In the presence of Shihan Marc Moor, head of Budo Warrior Schools and Shidoshi Dave Giddings, Ian Hageman and Tony Tildesley were tested for two and a half hours. During which time they showed Kihon Happo and multiple variations; San Shin again with multiple variations; randori against 9 opponents several times in response to stikes, grabs, restraints and combinations; muto dori against both knife and sword; multiple hanbo techniques; sword stances and blocks; and bo staff kata. Both did extremely well under trying conditions and showed a high level of skill, adaptability and flow.

At the end of the grading they were awarded their Shodan grade by Shihan Marc Moor and their instructor Shidoshi Dave Giddings.

The Martial Arts Show, NEC, May 2011
5/13/2011 8:51:28 AM

We had a great time at TMAS this year! The stand was right by the tatami demo area, so we had many people looking at all the budo and ninjutsu goodies we had - including a new Bujinkan t shirt, a new tessen design and lots of other kit!

Bujinkan Newbury Dojo stand

Over the weekend we did a total of four demo's, and taught a 'skill share session' which invited anyone interested to train in Bujinkan budo taijutsu and ninjutsu. The demo's were well recieved with lots of positive feedback from other martial artists, and we felt they went really well. The skill share session went well with a diverse group of martial artists training in taijutsu and the use of shuriken.

All in all a good weekend! Here are the video's of the demo on YouTube, it was filmed in segments, so look for a total of 14 videos!

Thank you to all who took part and helped with organisation, demo's, and minding the stand! We will be doing it all again next year, so watch this space!

In the lead up to the show in under 8 weeks we are concentrating on the demo techniques. Far from being restrictive this is a great opportunity to learn some of the rare weapons techniques and some of the techniques from the higher end of the syllabus. Its going to be a great weekend, with all the hard work being put in I know we will impress many visitors to the show with our demo!

Tonight we looked at ganseki nage from the basic principle of shifting the opponents hips and spine to take space and balance, various entry points from grabs and punches. We then looked at using the hanbo to achieve the same, and then at using a kunai vs a bokken to achieve the same throw. We also explored the various directions the throw can be executed, in front, sideways, down and directly into the floor to negate ukemi. All in all a good session.

Good session tonight, Kihon happo, connecting techniques, and finishing with some knife on knife defense - nice!

We began looking at Kihon Happo tonight with a view to threading the eight kata together into one form. After connecting the first three (Koshi kihon sanpo no kata) which looked at distancing and being more mobile during the techniques, we moved onto the next set of five (Toride kihon kata go-ho) and staying connected to tori and controlling their form and posture. A good session with lots of good work from students.

Good training session last night, we looked at San Shin no kata (Sho Shin Go Keiko No Kata) and worked on variations to the form as well as a shinken gata application for each of the five kata; Chi, Sui, Ka, Fu, Ku. Good start to the year!
